More than 600 small earthquakes have been recorded this weekend in a rural area near the Salton Sea in southern California, with the largest of them having a magnitude of 5.3, a geophysicist told CNN from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Geophysicist Randy Baldwin said 603 tremors with a magnitude of at least 1 occurred in the area from Saturday until just before sunrise Sunday.

The tremors were centered near Calipatria, along the San Andrés fault and about 50 kilometers north of the border with Mexico, according to the USGS map.

The area is not heavily populated and has been known to have had "swarms (of earthquakes) in the past," USGS seismologist Paul Caruso told CNN on Saturday.
