It is a stepping stone for young people with learning difficulties into vocational training.

From autumn there will be a practical class in the district.

The response is enormous.

The Lerchenfeld Middle School will be offering a so-called practical class for the first time from autumn, a pilot project in the Freising district.

And even now, more students want to seize this opportunity than expected.

"After the reporting in the Freisinger Tagblatt, we had a great response," reports headmaster Thomas Nistler.

“We already had to create a waiting list.” Nistler has already increased the number of participants.

Originally it was said that a maximum of 16 young people could attend the class.

Now there are already 20.

Springboard for young people who lack prospects

The offer is aimed at low-learning and low-performing students who have no prospect of successfully completing secondary school.

As the name of the class suggests, the lessons largely consist of practical components.

In addition, the students can prove themselves in a series of internships.

However, the offer is not suitable for young people with major socio-emotional behavioral problems, with a massive refusal or with drug or alcohol problems.

Nistler did not make it easy for himself when choosing.

All applicants were invited to an interview with their parents - not a natural offer in times of the pandemic.

In addition to the teacher of the practical class, the social pedagogue, who accompanied the young people and was specially hired by the district for the task, was also present.

“Now we have a really good mix,” concludes Nistler with satisfaction.

Practical classes: Around 70 percent graduate in this way

Ten girls and ten boys belong to the class.

They not only live in the city of Freising, but come from everywhere in the district - from Hallbergmoos to Zolling.

The success rate of the practical classes is high.

Around 70 percent of the graduates then make the leap to a further professional measure.

"Anyone who has a good will and tries hard also get the qualification," emphasizes Nistler. "And it is worth as much as passing the ninth grade."

With the craft, the middle school also has a cooperative partner at its side.

"Our doors are open," emphasized master craftsman Martin Reiter to the FT.

"The youngsters can become anything with us."
