The death toll from floods and landslides caused by heavy rains that fell on Sri Lanka during the past few days has risen to 17.
Reuters quoted Pradeep Kodibeli, assistant director of the National Center for Disaster Management, as saying in a statement that 17 people were killed in floods and landslides, and heavy rains affected more than 270,000 people, while nearly 100,000 homes were without electricity.
Kodebeli said water levels had begun to recede, but landslide warnings remained in ten districts.
The previous toll of victims indicated yesterday that six people were killed and five others missing, in addition to the displacement of about 5,000 people and the destruction of more than 600 homes.
