Kirchheim - The art space on Kirchheimer Dorfplatz has reopened and is being put on a new footing: the foundation of the association is currently in progress.

Artist Roman Hummitzsch was the driving force behind the open studio.

On November 9, 2019, the "KunstRaum" opened in the former post office on Kirchheimer Dorfplatz.

Initially, the offer to attend courses and to show exhibitions was only planned for one year, but now an association is being launched and a festival beer is being brewed to celebrate the founding of the association.

Interim use was well received

The former post office on Pfarrer-Caspar-Mayr-Platz had been vacant for over a year, and all the community's plans for a new use had been dashed.

Then Roman Hummitzsch was given the 100 square meters for a year.

He set up an open studio in which other artists also work, paint and exhibit or offer courses.

The idea for temporary use arose in a conversation with Mayor Maximilian Böltl.

The empty post office should somehow fill up before the renovation.

Hummitzsch became the main tenant, and the community helped him financially with the rent.

"Now there is art instead of post, which is a beautiful and courageous idea for temporary use thanks to the community," says Hummitzsch.

Also a good place for other events

The main idea in the art space is still to make art yourself, to be creative with or without guidance, to create something with your own hands, to learn new things and to experience community.

"My motto is loosely based on Joseph Beuys: Everyone is an artist," says Hummitzsch.

The art space also offers a great place for team building, citizens' get-togethers, company and private events.

A Kirchheim institution

Since then, over 400 artists between the ages of six and 80 have attended the courses on offer: drawing, creative writing, printing, welding, but also the art of brewing beer can be learned at Kirchheimer Dorfplatz, as well as baking bread or decorating motif cakes. Initially, Hummitzsch only planned the art space project until September 2020. But the temporary use has turned into a small institution in the community that is now being put on a new footing. The art space association is currently in the founding phase.

"Now that we will hopefully soon have survived the pandemic and find our way back to normality, we are looking forward to an expanded program in the Kunstraum eV", says Jochen Zimpelmann, who is supposed to be responsible for public relations at the association.

Roman Hummitzsch wants to take over the chairmanship, Alexander Ziegler should be responsible for the finances.

"By converting into a non-profit association, we have better opportunities to get funding and donations and to let the art space grow," says Hummitzsch.

In addition, the association members could get involved more, "They are no longer customers, but members and driving forces of the association."

His idea carries: Roman Hummitzsch is the initiator of the new contact point for creative people.

Soon there will be a celebration with festival beer

The aim is to offer artists and cultural workers a forum with exhibitions, readings or chamber music. A cultural festival is another goal to open up the space to a larger audience. Since the village festival has to be canceled again this year, there will be a (village) festival beer on the occasion of the foundation of the association. Zimpelmann, who offers brewing courses, brews the festival beer at a befriended brewery in Munich-Haidhausen. The brew is limited to 100 boxes and can be purchased in the Kunstraum from mid-July.
