The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that immigrants benefiting from Temporary Protected Status (TPS) who entered the country illegally are not eligible to obtain a
green card
that grants them permanent residence, as announced on Monday. .
It is the second unanimous decision the court has issued on immigration in the current ruling cycle.
Judge Elena Kagan led the ruling in
Sánchez v.
Mayorkas.
The decision limits TPS, a 30-year immigration program for foreigners whose countries are devastated by war or natural disasters, and
rules that their temporary protection against deportation does not guarantee a more permanent stay.
