In order to reduce this against Jewish culture, the adult education center would like to enable encounters - with the “Meet a Jew” campaign.

Hausham

- Most of the district citizens only encountered Jewish culture at school or in a museum.

Otherwise, one often only associates buzzwords such as anti-Semitism or the Middle East conflict with this world religion.

How Jews actually live and what makes up their culture can now be experienced firsthand at a personal encounter in an online event entitled “Meet a Jew” on Wednesday, June 16 .

The exchange is organized by the Hausham-Schliersee-Fischbachau Adult Education Center.

In an interview with our newspaper, the head of the vhs center, Danielle Döbbener, explains how the idea came about and what it promises to be.

Ms. Döbbener, how well do you know about Jewish culture?

Danielle Döbbener: To be

honest, I haven't had much contact with it so far.

I grew up in a Catholic part of France.

And here in the Oberland, too, as is well known, the Jewish faith is not very present.

That's why I'm very curious about “Meet a Jew”.

How did you come up with the idea to include this point in the program of the vhs-Zentrum Hausham-Schliersee-Fischbachau?

Danielle Döbbener:

The starting point was the anniversary year of 1700 years of Jewish life in Germany, which this year will be honored with special offers everywhere.

The adult education centers also take part.

After doing research on the Internet, I came across the “Meet a Jew” campaign of the Central Council of Jews.

I made contact and got a positive answer very quickly.

The planning itself was pretty unusual.

Also interesting: Neue vhs Oberland can start

In what way?

Danielle Döbbener:

Because the safety regulations are very strict.

For example, we only find out shortly beforehand who will be speaking at the event.

Since they are deliberately not celebrities, but rather private individuals, the names are not published in advance.

If we had held the meeting in attendance as originally planned, only the registered guests would have known the exact location.

You can see how much the Jewish people in our country still have to fear for their safety.

That is very worrying.

The recent escalation of the Middle East conflict has not helped to ease the situation.

Danielle Döbbener:

Unfortunately, yes.

But formats for encounters such as “Meet a Jew” are all the more needed, which enable cultural and religious exchange in an informal manner and thus help to break down prejudices.

Much comes from wrong or too little knowledge.

We want to clear up such misunderstandings with our event.

Will current politics be an issue too?

Danielle Döbbener:

No, quite deliberately not.

The aim of the action is to show that there are many more topics than anti-Semitism, the Shoah or the Middle East conflict that we can talk about.

And that is content that a personal encounter can convey better than a thousand books put together.
