The communities are happy.

Now it depends on the demand whether the pilot project becomes a permanent solution.

Munich

- Deniz Göcen stands in front of one of the litter meadows in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park and talks about the tourism pressure that prevails here in summer. About double-axle caravans that park in the protected meadows again and again, about wild campers and wildbieslers and dogs that are not on a leash. But despite all the problems, the nature park ranger says: “We don't want to exert even more pressure, we want to work together.” And that's why the new mountain bus of the Munich & Oberland Alpine Club section is behind her on this day in the parking lot at the Ettaler Mühle. Because the hikers from Munich should in the future take them to the Bavarian Alps without their own car. And also help to sharpen a considerate view of nature.

The DAV section took around 80,000 euros for the pilot project to make the trip to the mountain more sustainable.

In order to save the day trippers having to look for a parking space and to let the sheet metal avalanches in the Alpine region, which residents hate to shrink a little at the weekend, as Section Chairman Matthias Ballweg explained yesterday during the maiden voyage of the Munich mountain bus.

One bus each for early risers and late risers

From June 19, two buses for up to 90 passengers will run on Saturdays and Sundays from various starting points in Munich to the Ammer Mountains, through the Tegernsee Valley to Tyrol or Chiemgau.

One bus for early risers at 6.30 a.m., the second at 8.30 a.m.

Return from the terminus on all routes at 5:30 p.m.

The DAV wants to lure mountain enthusiasts from the car to the bus with a number of amenities: WiFi and air conditioning when arriving, the mountain bike or stroller can be taken with you, and exceeding it is possible thanks to the return journey from another stop.

"Bad connections or long transfer times are often a reason why mountaineers do not travel publicly," says Ballweg.

"With the Bergbus we want to make a contribution to removing these hurdles."

The participating communities are happy about the new offer.

"The mountain bus is a good basis for better visitor guidance," says Florian Hoffrohne, managing director of the Ammergau Alps Nature Park.

The demand for other destinations would be there, says Ballweg.

Mayors kept knocking on his door to see if the bus could stop in their community.

Long-term goal: A place for the mountain bus in the MVV

On the bus, day trippers can use the QR code to find out about local hiking tours.

In addition, volunteer DAV helpers should be on board for the first trips and sensitize the visitors in dealing with nature and in the choice of the mountain tour.

The mountain quiz is also running on the screens in the bus, during which the passenger learns that it can take up to five years for a handkerchief to rot in the mountains.

Support for the project comes from Munich's second mayor Katrin Habenschaden (Greens).

She is on the bus on the maiden voyage to Ettal (70 minutes from Munich yesterday without traffic jams) and hopes that the new lines will now be used diligently over the summer.

After that, the DAV needs financially strong partners to maintain or expand the connection.

Habenschaden wants to drum for a permanent mountain bus route in the city council.

"In the long term it would of course be great if the mountain bus could become a line in the MVV."
