The cultivation of aromatic crops, especially the black seed or nigella, has witnessed a significant expansion in Hama governorate in recent years as an alternative to other crops due to its high economic feasibility and ease of marketing.
In a statement to SANA Economic Bulletin, between Ezz El-Din Mustafa, a “farmer” from the town of Al-Lataminah, one of the most important areas for its cultivation and production, the Nigella sativa crop is at the forefront of the aromatic and medicinal crops that are widely cultivated in the lands of Al-Lataminah and achieve rewarding profits for its farmers and producers because it is rain-fed agriculture, noting that the production One dunam ranges between 50 kilograms, depending on the rate of rain and the quality of the season.
Mustafa explained that the crop is planted during the month of January and harvested during the month of June, and it provides a good financial return for the farmers in the town, expressing his hope that the town will be fully supplied with electricity, which will reflect positively on the expansion of irrigated agriculture and an increase in production for various crops.
For her part, Laila Azzouz, head of the Department of Planning and International Cooperation in the Directorate of Agriculture of Hama, stated that the total area planted with the black seed crop for this year is 14,000 dunums, of which 11,903 dunums are irrigated and the rest is Baal, indicating that its cultivation is concentrated in the work of the district in Mhardeh, Kafr Zita, Hur himself, Soran and the vicinity of Hama city. In the first and second stability zones.
Azzouz pointed out that the cultivation of aromatic and medicinal plants such as cumin, anise and nigella has recently witnessed an expansion in the cultivated areas and an increasing demand by farmers because it is low-cost, financially rewarding and convenient for the land and the farmer, as it does not require great effort and service.
It is noteworthy that the estimated production of the black seed crop in the field of cultivation of Hama for this season exceeds 1076 tons.
