Land in sight for the Angels Share: The floating whiskey warehouse of Sylt Destillerie GmbH on Tegernsee will take its last berth - at a well-known hotel.

Bad Wiessee / Hausham

- In and of itself, the floating barrel warehouse that the Slyrs distillery from Neuhaus on the North Sea bought is used to much more stormy waters than in its new home in the Oberland. But although the swell here is much more restrained than at the sea, Slyrs co-founder Anton Stetter and the managing director of the Lantenhammer distillery, Tobias Maier, did not find it easy to find a berth for the whiskey ship. The reason: the weight of the full barrels, which, according to Stetter, gives the Angels Share a draft of a good two meters.

As reported, Stetter and Maier had received a number of offers.

Most fell out because the bank area was too shallow.

At the event boathouse of the Hotel Terrassenhof in Bad Wiessee, however, the historic cutter will not run aground, even with its high percentage cargo in its belly.

And because the area as an event location with the neighboring sailing center fits well with the concept of the whiskey makers, Stetter and Maier and Terrassenhof boss Alwin Gericke decided that Angels Share would moor there.

Whiskey ship is currently still being restored

Before it starts its last crossing (this time on the low-loader over the motorway), it still has to be extensively restored.

A shipyard on the North Sea is currently doing the lower part up to the waterline.

For the visible areas of the ship and the interior fittings, Stetter would prefer to rely on tried and tested Bavarian craftsmanship, he says with a smile.

“It has already gotten to the point that our boat builders also have to prepare shrimp cutters from the far north.” All that remains to be done is to find a carpenter who can take on this special task despite being full of order books.

It is expected that the Angels Share will then be placed in Tegernsee by truck crane in August.

Terrassenhof boss is looking forward to the whiskey ship

Terrassenhof boss Gericke is already full of anticipation to be able to offer the whiskey ship a worthy last port. "It is really great that we have found each other." In fact, he found out about Stetter's search for a berth through a report in the Miesbacher Merkur, says Gericke. “But we've known each other for a long time.” What was previously a good gastronomic business relationship is now also becoming a cooperation in the area of events. “Angels Share fits our activities like a fist on the eye,” enthuses Gericke. From a marketing point of view, a floating whiskey warehouse right in front of the hotel is of course a real plus.

Incidentally, the barrels are used to store the “Sild” created together with Alexander Sievers, the owner of Wein Heiliger GmbH on Sylt.

At the same time, the “Sild Crannog” in the hull of the successor to the Angels Share - the 70-year-old excursion ship “Gret Palucca” - will mature in the port of List.

The “Sild Jöl en Reek”, on the other hand, is stored in a recently discovered former bunker after the barley was first kilned over Sylt peat.

The focus of Angels Share in Tegernsee, on the other hand, is not necessarily the maturation of the whiskey, but rather the entertainment of fans of special spirits.

And they should be grateful at tastings and other events that the waves are rather gentle there.
