In the middle and north, east and south municipal offices there are currently numerous inquiries for new identity cards and passports every day, as the Nuremberg * town hall announced in a press release.

The rush is a great challenge for the officials.

A look at the figures shows: The number of ID documents issued has almost tripled compared to the previous year.

In May 2021, the city of Nuremberg issued almost 12,000 identification documents, in the previous year there were only just under 4,000.The latter number is due to the corona pandemic, but the number from May 2021 also exceeds the previous years by far: in 2017 there were around 7,000 documents in May , Around 8000 in 2018 and 7700 in 2019. 

The city of Nuremberg asks interested parties to make an appointment to apply for identification documents at the respective citizens' office, as a personal interview is legally necessary.

Citizens can register online at www.einwohneramt.nuernberg.de.

Appointments with a lead time of up to twelve weeks are offered there.

In addition, in the medium term, appointments will be activated on the Friday of the previous week at around 11 a.m. and, at short notice, additional appointments will be activated on a daily basis at around 8 a.m. 

Nuremberg: passport expired - what now?

Due to the high demand, the Bürgerämter Mitte, Nord, Ost and Süd have expanded their resources and are offering additional appointments in off-peak times and on Wednesday afternoons.

Citizens with an expired passport or identity card do not have to worry if they cannot apply for the new documents in good time.

Due to the high demand and limited capacities, the city of Nuremberg has currently suspended consequences such as fine proceedings.
