The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Damascus University celebrated the Arabic Language Day and honored the students who won the first competition for the poet of Damascus University, titled “The glory of the East begins with Damascus,” in addition to honoring a number of professors of the Arabic language department.

The celebration included artistic and poetic segments and literary interventions entitled “The Impact of the Stories of One Thousand and One Nights in the West” by Dr. Mahmoud Miqdad and “Arabic and Languages ​​of the East” by Dr. Eid Marei, in addition to many other student interventions and recitation of winning poems in the competition.

In her speech, Dr. Mounira Abu Faour, Head of the Arabic Language Department at the Faculty of Arts, stressed that the Arabic language represents the impenetrable bulwark of the identity and unity of the Arab people and the vessel that carries its cultural and civilizational heritage, noting the capabilities of the students of the Arabic Language Department who have proven their excellence in language, poetry and recitation.

Dr. Hussein Jumaa, head of the competition jury, pointed out that such competitions encourage young people to adhere to the Arabic language, as it is the mother tongue and one of the elements of identity that contributed to the protection of Arab history and culture, considering that Damascus University originated the Arabic letter from the beginning and has been loyal to this letter since 1919 in its medical colleges and rights.

The student who won first place in the competition, Dana Abu Mahmoud, MA in the Department of Literary Studies, expressed her pride for winning the competition, during which she presented a poem about Damascus entitled “Hymns of Love.”

In turn, the student, Ahmed Mohamed Issa, who won second place, drew attention to the importance of such competitions to introduce the young generation to its civilization and history at a time when there is no longer a great deal of interest in poetry and literature.

The third place winner, student Adnan Al-Diri, Master of Arabic Language in the Department of Rhetoric and Criticism, said that he presented a poem entitled “Damascus, O Qibla of the World,” stressing the need to continue supporting the Arabic language through literary activities and competitions.

From the third Faculty of Law in Quneitra, the student called Fadi Murad to organize such activities constantly to include seminars and discussion of books to preserve the Arabic language and encourage students to study and see references and knowledge encyclopedias.
