After the grammar schools, the FOS / BOS will also start their Abitur this Thursday.

500 young women and men from grades 12 and 13 have registered, a little more than a year ago, reports headmaster Jens Baumgärtel in an interview with our newspaper.

Erding - It is already the second Corona high school diploma.

There are around 29,000 students across Bavaria.

The Abitur was originally supposed to start in mid-May, but had been postponed months ago by the Ministry of Education due to the lockdown,

As such, the exams have already started, with the English group tests that took place before the Whitsun holidays. The starting shot is given today with the subject of German. The individually selected profile subject is queried on Friday, followed by English and mathematics on Monday and Tuesday. The supplementary examination for the acquisition of the general higher education entrance qualification, which corresponds to the high school Abitur, is scheduled for Wednesday, June 16.

Baumgärtel is convinced: “The graduating students are very well prepared and therefore correspondingly calm.” Fortunately, they were able to bring the graduating classes back in February. "There was only another three-week phase with distance teaching during the high phase of the third corona wave because so many students were in quarantine," reports the school principal. But before Pentecost they returned to face-to-face classes. Voluntary tutors got involved in order to prepare the young people as best as possible. For this purpose, there were separate team meetings, including maths, "which were very well received," assures the director.

He also praised the offer of the virtual vocational school, which was offered throughout Bavaria.

"Here you could prepare specifically in selected areas, such as curve discussions in math," said Baumgärtel.

The exam is a logistical challenge.

"We use the auditorium and the vocational school gymnasium for around 100 high school graduates each, but also every single classroom," promises the headmaster.

A maximum of 16 young people would then sit in the rooms - each two meters apart.

Because almost all teachers are required to supervise, "we have sent all other students for the exam days in coordination with the Ministry of Education in the material-based distance teaching".

The graduates will get their places for every four days - and always the same. “That way, we can always see who sat where.” Yesterday, Wednesday, the students received their grades - and a self-test that applies to the first two days of the exam. "You will get a second home for Sunday, it will then be valid for the remaining two days." The examination time has been extended by 30 minutes and a mask is required.

According to Baumgärtel, there are two extra exam rooms in all cases - for chronically ill people who have not yet been vaccinated and in the event that someone has to be quarantined during high school.

"So far, this has not been the case," said the senior studies director.

Most of the teachers have already been vaccinated, half of them for the second time.

"The district managed that very well," praised Baumgärtel.

The students go to the exams after a written marathon.

In contrast to a year ago, all disciplines and not just the core subjects were taught again in the spring.

Baumgärtel hopes that the students will not only receive their certificates in class, as in 2020.

"At the moment it looks good that we can hold four small graduation parties for 120 high school graduates each, but unfortunately without the parents." Baumgärtel says: "The young people deserved it after this difficult time."
