The seasonal rental platform is launching an unprecedented call for applications: it invites twelve people to live with its hosts for a year in three places.

Want to get out of your daily grind for a year?

At a time when many employees are returning to their offices after several months of teleworking, the seasonal rental platform Airbnb decides to test a new concept.

And to be talked about in this period of summer reservations.

It offers twelve applicants from all over the world the opportunity to live for a year wherever they want, with almost all expenses paid.

"We pay the transport costs and the rental of the accommodation but not the food", specifies the group.

This operation, called “Everywhere at home with Airbnb” targets a very large audience.

"We are looking for a motley set of twelve candidates who can be part of the pilot for 12 consecutive months, from July 2021 to July 2022," says Airbnb.

Flexible candidates

Open "to young families, teleworkers, professionals in the creative industry, parents whose children have left the family nest, or any profile that has the possibility of adopting a nomadic life", this experiment is inspired by a "strong trend to come, that of a more flexible life", details the site. Successful applicants are not forced to stay in accommodation for a minimum period of time and can decide “at their convenience” to change it.

To justify this experiment, Airbnb highlights one of its recent studies showing that the share of long stays of 28 days or more booked increased by 10% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to 2019. “11% of people with booked long-term stays in 2021 reported adopting a nomadic lifestyle, and 74% of users surveyed in five countries expressed interest in a life that, with the pandemic behind us, is not centered on where their employer is established, ”insists the group.

Know how to get by in English

Adventure tempts you? Only two conditions are set by Airbnb: be over 18 - knowing that the selected candidate can be accompanied by three people (minors or adults) - and be able to speak English. “You have to be able to converse, be able to get by in English,” says the site, but no test will be carried out. On the other hand, candidates who want to apply must register on the group's website, answer a questionnaire and specify their motivations in the language of Shakespeare.

As for the selection process, it is intended to be very fast.

Applications are open online until June 30.

Then, a jury made up of group leaders will select the applications until July 19, when the names of the twelve selected travelers will be made public.

Successful candidates will be trained and supported for two months, in July and August, to help them book their trips and accommodations.

In return, they undertake to share their feelings, their experience feedback in order to allow the group to develop its offer and its model and to adapt it to the different forms of nomadism.

This operation a few weeks before the summer vacation is cringe among anti-Airbnbs. "It's hypocritical when we know that the platform forces millions of families to live far from their workplace because of the real estate pressure it exerts and while it encourages many owners to transform their housing assets in illegal hotels by excluding traditional tenants, annoys Vincent Aulnay, member of the Parisvsbnb collective. It's just a way for Airbnb to restore its image in the face of communities angry with its economic model. Under the pretext of nomadism, we always find the same quest, that of profitability at all costs, ”he denounces.
