Along the S4 near Puchheim: the road should become a fast cycle path

The Aubinger Weg is a small street, but a popular route from Puchheim to Munich for many drivers.

That could be the end of it - it goes according to the will of the bicycle sponsors.

In plans, the street is intended as a pure express bike path.

Local politicians fear fierce opposition.

Puchheim

- It is almost certain where exactly the future cycle highway from Munich to Fürstenfeldbruck will run on Puchheimer Flur.

But everything else still seems to be in the stars.

In any case, many questions remained unanswered now that the City Council's Environment Committee has been informed of the first results of a feasibility study.

The express bike path would come from Bruck via Emmering to Puchheim.

There a route would have to be laid across the landscape for the fast cyclists.

In Puchheim, the route is apparently easier.

From the northwest in the direction of the train station, the express route can follow the course of Roggensteiner Straße.

The city has already acquired land there for a (normal) cycle path.

If you want to steer the cyclists as straight as possible through Puchheim, you would then have to cross the station forecourt - a bottleneck.

A bridge would have to be built over this in the north, which would be expensive.

From the train station further in a south-easterly direction towards Munich, the Aubinger Weg would be wide enough as a bicycle lane for cyclists.

As Sebastian Klaß, the district's bicycle traffic officer, explained, there are several implementation options for the individual route sections in the district.

Only when it has been decided which variant will be used can the costs be estimated.

These, in turn, are the basis for a cost-benefit analysis, which should then show whether the cycle motorway is profitable at all.

There would only be state funding if at least 2,000 cyclists a day use the route.

What do Puchheim's dealerships say?

In the city of Munich, this analysis was apparently already to the fullest satisfaction, there are probably considerations to close the own last section before the district border, the Eichenauer Strasse, to vehicle traffic.

For the route between Puchheim and the district border with the state capital, a bicycle road with a safety strip leading to the parking lots is an option.

It remains to be seen whether this is compatible with car dealerships and companies in the automotive industry that are based on or near the proposed cycle highway in Puchheim, said Klaß.

Warning of great resistance

Puchheim's mayor Norbert Seidl (SPD) believes that they too will accept the change in mobility. His party friend Jean-Marie Leone warns of great resistance if the Aubinger Weg is practically closed. "Smarter solutions" are needed than locking cars out and just worrying about cyclists: "Other road users also have their rights."

In any case, it will be some time before the express cycle route plans can be implemented. It is also related to the three-track expansion of the S 4. The railway had agreed to think about the rapid cycle path, reported the bicycle officer. Nevertheless, it makes little sense to build a route before the third railroad track is in place. And that won't be something until the end of the decade at the earliest. That is why the city should finish its cycle path to Eichenau along Roggensteiner Strasse, the expert advised. The short stretch can still become part of the cycle expressway. (Olf Paschen)
