More than 6,000 people died in the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia in autumn 2020.
There has been a ceasefire since November, but there are still violent clashes between the two countries.
Armenia accuses Azerbaijan of not having released all prisoners of war despite several exchanges.
The Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has now offered his son to Azerbaijan in exchange for all Armenian prisoners of war.
The 46-year-old told the Armenpress agency that he had commissioned the relevant committees to officially forward his proposal.
"Don't get me wrong: this is not the only tool to solve the problem."
Pashinyan has four children.
His son Ashot is in his early 20s. He wrote on Facebook that he was ready to share.
In 2018 and 2020 he volunteered for military service in Nagorno Karabakh.
Political crisis in Armenia
It is unclear how many prisoners are currently in the hands of Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan declares that it has fulfilled its obligations under an agreement.
However, the agreement did not include those prisoners who Armenia had "sent to areas of Azerbaijan" after the fighting ended, it said.
In the war between September 27 and November 9, 2020 for the Nagorno-Karabakh region, Azerbaijan reclaimed large parts of the territory it had lost in the early 1990s.
The war had triggered a political crisis in Armenia.
During mass protests, the opposition demanded Pashinyan's resignation and new elections.
In a week and a half, on June 20, the 46-year-old wants to be confirmed in office in an early parliamentary election.
Recently there have been new tensions on the border between the two countries.
