Willi Baumgartner should have been honored with the Mauerner citizen medal for a long time.

Now it was time for the presentation and an extensive eulogy.

- In a small ceremony and in the presence of the local councils, Willi Baumgartner was awarded the Mauerner Citizen Medal by local chief Georg Krojer. At the beginning of his laudation, Krojer regretted that the honor should actually have taken place in the 2020 citizens' meeting, but that the event had to be canceled due to the pandemic and the report had to be published online. Therefore, it has now been decided to present the award on a small scale in the Citizens' Hall of the Old Town Hall.

Since 2003, the Citizen's Medal has been awarded to people who have achieved an outstanding amount through their voluntary work or their social work in the community and have shown extraordinary commitment.

“Often these citizens have worked tirelessly for many years, naturally and without consideration, for the common good in their free time,” explained Krojer.

Therefore it is an honor for him to recognize the great achievement of Willi Baumgartner.

"You are someone who sees the work, who knows what to do - and you have shown that as a volunteer for many years in the clubs, but very extraordinarily in the warrior and soldier comradeship walls."

Often inconspicuous to the public

Baumgartner has been a member of the Warrior Association since 1962, and has already been awarded the Gold Medal of Honor for 50 years of membership. For decades he has also been an active member of the board, from 1994 to 2003 he was secretary and since 2012 he has been an assessor. An association lives from many small and large works, the so-called "Schanzln", which are often not noticed by the public, emphasized the laudator. For example, the war memorial has been looked after and maintained by Baumgartner for 22 years. That means regular mowing - with your own mower - and fertilizing the lawn, cutting and caring for the hedges and bushes. Even the rubbish, which unfortunately is often left at the memorial, is "picked up by Willi".

Baumgartner is still in charge of the "wonderful, annual Christmas lights on the memorial" with helpers from the KSK, which are attached to the bushes at a lofty height.

Even at the age of 80, he was not only standing at the memorial as a torchbearer on the Warrior's Day, but was also one of the three men who set up the flagpoles on the war memorial and then put it down again.

It goes without saying that the man from the Wall should also be actively involved in the annual collection for war graves.

But one thing should not go unmentioned, said Mayor Krojer: Baumgartner always receives support for all his voluntary activities from his wife Hanni.

"Great role model for all of us"

During his time as a member of the parish council from 1986 to 1998, Willi Baumgartner took on a lot of time-consuming work in the church. At solemn celebrations and occasions in the parish, the couple would have decorated the church splendidly. Even the Baumgartner family's private Christmas crib was set up in the Mauerner church for over 20 years.

"We know you as a friendly and conscientious person who has never made a fuss about your voluntary work," continued Krojer.

“Citizens like you, dear Willi, are worth gold!

You are always there when help is needed.

You are a great role model for all of us. ”It is a great honor and pleasure for him, Krojer continues, to say thank you to Willi Baumgartner, to express the great appreciation on behalf of the local council and to award him the citizen's medal.
