At least eleven people, including eight children, were killed and seven others injured in Mumbai in a building collapse blamed on heavy monsoon rains, Indian authorities said Thursday (June 10th).

Authorities in the western state capital of Maharashtra confirmed that seven other residents were injured Wednesday evening in the collapse of the building located in a slum. Among the injured, six were in stable condition, and a 30-year-old woman was admitted to hospital in critical condition, authorities said. Search and rescue operations continued Thursday to find several missing people.
"Three people could still be trapped
(in the rubble)
and search operations are underway,"
said Prabhat Rahangdale, an official in the Municipality of Bombay, quoted by the
Indian Express Daily
. Residents of neighboring structures whose condition appears to be precarious and dangerous have been evacuated. The collapses of poorly constructed buildings are tragically common during the monsoon season that began in Mumbai on Wednesday, with its fair share of flooding wreaking havoc on road traffic.
