US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson today (Thursday) vowed to defend the "perpetual values" of their countries in the face of new and old challenges.

The two leaders are due in a coastal town in Cornwall, England, ahead of the G7 summit tomorrow.

This is Biden's first visit overseas since taking office in January, and aims to make it clear to the continent that "America is back" after four years of Donald Trump's tumultuous tenure and his "America First" policy.

After the convening of the seven industrialized nations, Biden will proceed to Brussels for a meeting of NATO leaders and then conclude his visit to Europe in a first meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Biden said his meeting with Johnson was helpful, and that he emphasized in it the special relationship between the two allies in the fight against climate change, world security and the fight against the Corona plague.

The President of the United States said that the two leaders had updated the "Atlantic Treaty" signed 80 years ago, on the basis of which the UN and the NATO Alliance were founded.

He added that the alliance faces challenges that include cyber security, new technologies, global health and the climate crisis.

Biden said he and the British prime minister discussed the climate summit convened by Washington last April and another summit to be held later this year in Scotland.

Biden said the talks also dealt with Afghanistan and the withdrawal of foreign forces from it.

The update of the Atlantic Treaty, signed between US President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1941, at the height of World War II, concerns threats posed by countries such as China and Russia.

The updated Convention promises to promote free trade, human rights and world order based on laws, and to fight "those who seek to undermine our alliances and institutions".

The sharp treaty also focuses on "interference in elections through disinformation" and dubious economic policies, claims made by the West against Moscow and Beijing.
