The young man who slapped French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this week was sent today (Thursday) to four months in prison. In expedited legal proceedings, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison, out of 14 on probation. BFMTV reported that Damien Tarl, a 28-year-old martial arts and fencing enthusiast, told a court in Valence in the south of France that he was a right-wing man who did so because Macron symbolizes "everything that is rotten in France."

The young man said that a few days before the president's visit to the area, he considered throwing an egg or tart cake at him, but added that the slap was not planned. "I think Macron faithfully represents the decay of our country," he told the court. "If I had called Macron out for a sunrise duel, I doubt he would have responded."

In Tarle's house is Adolf Hitler's book "Mein Kampf" and weapons. He was arrested along with another friend who was by his side at the time of the attack. None of them had a criminal record. The maximum penalty for assaulting an elected official is three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.

Macron described the attack as a solitary event, saying that violence and hatred are a threat to democracy.

His office did not respond to Tral's remarks in court.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, when Macron was targeting local residents in a small town in the Southern District.

Tarl shouted "Monjawa, St. Dennis" as he slapped Macron on the cheek with his right hand, a medieval battle cry hinting at his interest in the marginal monarchist movement.

In posts he posted on social media it was revealed that he is following royal channels and people from the extreme right.

Despite the small number of supporters of these groups, the authorities see them as a growing danger.

Several of them were outlawed, including one this year, and some of their members were arrested.

They place at the center of their ideology what they see as undermining French identity.

A friend of Trall, who identified himself only as Luik, told BFMTV that he was "shocked" by the slap.

A few hours before the attack, a local TV channel aired a short video showing Tarl with two friends waiting for a macaroon.

Tarrell and the second person arrested did not say a word, but the third person hissed: "There are things that need to be said, but unfortunately it is impossible. One of them is the decline of France."
