A violent thunderstorm unloaded over Peiting on Wednesday evening.

Torrential rains filled numerous cellars.

The fire brigade and the technical relief organization were in constant use until late at night.

An old problem caused a stir in Peiting-Birkenried.

Peiting

- When Klaus Straub looked up at the sky on Wednesday afternoon, he suspected evil. Dark clouds piled up over Peiting like a black wall. A little later, the fire chief's fears were to be confirmed. A violent thunderstorm broke over the market town at around 4 p.m., and the rain poured down like a torrent. The masses of water that fell from the sky were not without consequences.

The fire department received the first alarm at 4.15 p.m.

"After that, things happened in quick succession," reports Straub.

The emergency calls reached the emergency services from all over the municipality.

Many homeowners asked for help because the underground car park and basement were full.

In front of some buildings, such as on Ammergauer Strasse, the heavy rain had formed a real lake.

In these cases, the firefighters used sandbags to secure the doors from the ingress of water.

50 Peitinger firefighters were in constant use with their pumps.

Because they couldn't keep up despite all their efforts, the Schongau fire brigade helped out in the meantime.

According to Straub, the neighbors from Lechstadt took care of the cellars of a row house complex, into which the water had penetrated through the light shafts.

Call for help in the evening from Peiting-Birkenried

When everything seemed to be over in the evening and the military had just stowed away their equipment, another call for help was received.

It came from Roswitha Rau, who lives in Espenweg.

The residents of the residential area there are suffering from heavy rain events.

In the past, water had repeatedly entered the houses.

This time, too, the heavy rainfall had already made its way into individual cellars.

This is actually supposed to be prevented by a new rainwater pipe that has been laid along Jägerstrasse since the beginning of April.

It replaces the overgrown drainage pipe, because of which the rainwater is no longer properly routed past the property (we reported).

THW moves with a high-performance pump

The problem: "Unfortunately, the new line is not yet ready," says market builder Fabian Kreitl, who hurried to Birkenried himself on Wednesday evening. The pipes have already been laid as far as Weidenweg. However, the end is closed because of the ongoing construction work. “So the water can get in, but not out again.” Instead of flowing underground, the water stayed on the surface and found its way into the adjacent gardens, cellars and fields. Desperately the called fire brigade fought with their devices against the water masses - but without success. “We then asked the THW for help,” says Straub. That turned out to be a savior in times of need. The high-performance pump of the technical relief organization pumped thousands of liters of rainwater into the mixed water sewer all night."Without their help, we wouldn't have had a chance," says Rauh gratefully.

The new rainwater pipe should be finally ready by mid-July. You lost time because of a few bad weather days, says Kreitl. The market builder rejects rumors that the construction company had given up due to difficulties in the execution. “It was clear from the start that it would not be an easy construction site.” So Rauh and the other residents only hope that the next thunderstorm cells will make a wide detour around the market town.
