"It is not a tourist attraction, nor a place to visit with your family," warn the authorities about the hole in Puebla. "It hurts, because this is the only thing we have," says the owner of the house.

The huge sovacon that appeared at the end of May in an agricultural field in the state of Puebla, in central Mexico, continues to grow and will do so even more, according to local authorities.

The hole, located in the town of Zacatepec, east of Mexico City, has already reached a diameter of more than 125 meters (400 feet), exceeding the size of a soccer field.

"It is a very hard time for us. It hurts, because this is the only thing we have," said Magdalena Xalamigua Xopillacle, whose brick-and-concrete-block house began to slowly sink into the gigantic hole.

"Sometimes we feel bad because of so much sadness," he said.

The Mexican government has sent soldiers to keep people 600 meters (2,000 feet) away from the hole, which is 15 meters (50 feet) deep.

Some residents of the area believe that the sinkhole is the result of excessive extraction of groundwater by factories or a water bottling plant located in the area.

But the bottom is full of water that seems to have strong currents, so the National Civil Protection Coordination of the Government of Mexico pointed out that experts consider that it is the result of something similar to an underground river

"It is highly possible that the origin of the sinkhole is associated with the presence of underground water flows," underlined Civil Protection.

The public security agency asked the population to stay away from the place, considering that more fractures may occur.

They fear that the giant sinkhole of Puebla will grow and the earth will swallow everything around it

"It is not a tourist attraction, nor a place to visit with your family," said Civil Protection on Wednesday.

The authorities have put up metal fences and the police have cordoned off the area to keep people out, and have restricted drone overflights.
