The government launched the new crown vaccination program for more than 100 days. As of June 9, the first dose of vaccination rate was 24.1%. Among them, the vaccination rate for the elderly was lower than the average vaccination rate. The vaccination rate was 21.35% for the 60-69 year olds and only 13.73 for the 70-79 year olds. %.
An investigation by the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University found that nearly half of the elderly are not clear about the difference between the two vaccines of Kexing and Fubitai. One-third have not decided whether to vaccinate or not. At the same time, the incentive for them to vaccinate is not a lottery or customs clearance.
The Faculty of Medicine of CUHK interviewed 1,200 adults by telephone from April 23 to May 8 this year to learn about citizens’ perceptions of the new crown vaccine and the reasons for hesitation in vaccination.
The results showed that 47.6% of respondents 60 years of age or older did not know or did not know the difference between Kexing and Fubitai vaccines.
It is worth noting that more than 80% of elderly people aged 60 or above believe that medical staff should recommend which vaccine should be vaccinated based on their physical conditions, which is 2.1% more than the overall respondents.
Another 26.6% of elders aged 60 or above believe that the government should only provide the most suitable vaccine to the public, which is 10.7 percentage points higher than the overall rate. The data shows that the elderly need more assistance in selecting vaccines.
The report also asked the interviewees whether they would be vaccinated in the next six months. One-third of the elderly said they were uncertain, which was 8.4% higher than the overall level. At the same time, 43.6% of the elderly indicated that they did not intend to be vaccinated, and the proportion was lower than that of other age groups.
In addition, when asked why the elderly did not get vaccinated, the highest score was "I feel that my body is not suitable for vaccination", which is 7 points higher than the overall level and 0.9 points.
Asked if the implementation of a vaccination pass in Hong Kong facilitates certain activities or access to certain places, how much impact will it have on the promotion of vaccination, the five options are not higher than 4 points.
However, relaxation of visits to hospitals and institutions, and relaxation of religious activities are more likely to encourage elderly people aged 60 or above to be vaccinated. The two options are 1.5 and 0.3 points higher than the overall score, reflecting that the relaxation of these activities after vaccination is more attractive to the elderly .
Regarding the incentives for vaccination, 70.1% of the people disapprove of the government’s cash encouragement to vaccinate citizens. The disapproval rate among the three age groups is the lowest among the three age groups at 63.1%.
With regard to compulsory vaccination, the most people agree with compulsory vaccination by police and firefighters who provide necessary social services, reaching 59.3%, followed by 51.1% overall in favour of compulsory vaccination for foreign domestic helpers.
