Russia is preparing to provide Iran with an advanced satellite system that will give Tehran an unprecedented ability to track military targets throughout the Middle East and beyond, the Washington Post reported Friday night.

According to American and Middle Eastern sources who were briefed on the transfer details, the satellite will be able to monitor bases in Israel, and its transfer may take place within a few months.

The Russian plan will send the Iranians the "Canopus-V" satellite, equipped with a high-resolution camera that will significantly enrich Iran's espionage capabilities.

The camera will, among other things, allow long-term monitoring of IDF bases, as well as oil refineries in the Persian Gulf, and facilities that house American forces in Iraq.

Sources further elaborated that while the Canopos-V was tagged for civilian use, senior Iranian military officials were significantly involved in its acquisition.

In addition, Revolutionary Guards leaders have made several trips to Russia since 2018 to help negotiate terms of purchase.

Russian experts, for their part, traveled to Iran to help train ground crews to operate the satellite from a new facility being built near the northern city of Karj in Alborz province.
