Paralympics cyclist Wolfgang Sacher made a brilliant comeback: At the European Championships in Austria, the 54-year-old chairman of the RSC Wolfratshausen took third place - and that after a break of almost eight years.

Wolfratshausen - First the resignation, then the first exclamation mark: Wolfgang Sacher put his words into action at the European Paralympic Cyclist Championships on the weekend in Schwanenstadt, Upper Austria, and took third place in the individual time trial. On the 12.5-kilometer course, the disabled cyclist from the ranks of the RSC Wolfratshausen only had to admit defeat to the Spaniard Eduardo Santas Asensio (17:28 minutes) and his national team colleague Steffen Warias (17:45 minutes) in 17:50 minutes - and thus secured the bronze medal.

“That was a big surprise,” says Sacher, happy about the successful start to his second career. “I only started training more ambitiously last year. The fact that I can now fight for medals against international competition is a great thing. "

For Sacher, who won the Paralympics gold medal in Beijing in 2008, it was the first international competition since retiring in 2012. At that time, he announced his retirement after the London Paralympic Games. Last autumn, however, the now 54-year-old made a small comeback at the Bavarian Championships and won the silver medal there (we reported). “I tasted blood there. This spring I was able to train very well and even went back to the training camp on Mallorca with the Bavarian cycling team. That has now paid off, ”says Sacher, who in 2021 had already cycled almost 8,000 kilometers.

After his most recent success, it comes as no surprise that the “Disabled Athlete of the Year 2008” has set himself higher goals again.

In autumn, the chairman of the RSC Wolfratshausen wants to start at a World Cup for the first time since 2012.

Together with his national team colleague Erich Winkler, he is also planning to start the Tour Transalp, a week-long stage race across the Alps, in September.

The long-term goal, however, should be the Paralympics in Paris in 2024.

"I may not be the youngest anymore, but I can do it in the individual time trial," he says resolutely.

Sacher would then be 57 years old.

Another participation in the Paralympic Games - that would be the highlight of Wolfgang Sacher's second career.

The RSC cyclist laid the foundation stone at the weekend.
