(CNN) -

The Palm Beach County, Florida, sheriff's office identified the perpetrator in the deadly shooting at a Publix supermarket Thursday as 55-year-old Timothy J. Wall. Authorities say Wall shot a woman in the third age and his one-year-old grandson inside the Royal Palm Beach grocery store before committing suicide.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office previously said there is no known relationship between the attacker and the victims, who will remain unidentified after their families turned to Marsy's Law.

The sheriff's office responded to the shooting around 11:40 a.m., according to the sheriff's office, and witnesses describe a chaotic scene after the shots rang out, with people running for their lives.

"People thought they were popping balloons," witness John Charles told CNN.

He was trying to get into the store when he saw people running out.

Employees at the store told him not to go inside, he said.

"I was about to go to the produce section and buy some bananas for lunch and I didn't make it to the store."

Witness Ron Glassman also saw the incident from the store parking lot, telling CNN affiliate WPEC: "Everybody started out, yelling, 'Active shooter, shoot, get out, get out.'

Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay issued a statement asking for prayers for the families of the victims and described the shooting as yet another example of the scourge of gun violence in the United States.

"We have become too insensitive to gun violence," McKinlay said on Twitter.

"Tomorrow we must step forward and have a very honest conversation about why this happened and what we can do specifically to prevent this violence," he said.

"Inaction is not an option."

A Publix spokesperson told reporters Friday that the store had been disinfected and reorganized.

"We discarded all products that were impacted and also redesigned our store layout," said Maria Brous, Publix Supermarkets director of communications.

Affected employees are being offered grief counseling, Brous said.

The store's reopening date will likely be announced on Friday.
