Zhang Ruihui, a senior general education teacher and vice-chairman of the Education Association, who has been teaching for nearly 30 years due to the 1989 Democracy Movement's involvement in education, will retire early after the end of the school year.

He replied to "Hong Kong 01" today (11th), stating that early retirement mainly involves personal reasons, and emphasized that the school and the school sponsoring organization did not exert pressure: "IKEA's legal system will rest first and there is no next step."

As a general education teacher since the 1990s, he described it as a rare opportunity for general education to provide learning opportunities from being questioned in the early days to being noticed and recognized by all walks of life.

He criticized the Hong Kong government for focusing more on political interests than education development. "One stick to kill general education" has greatly reduced the opportunities for students to understand contemporary issues and critical thinking. Hong Kong education is facing regression.

He encouraged the education staff to stick to the bottom line and maintain the education profession.

After the 1989 pro-democracy movement, Zhang Ruihui hoped to inherit the concept of understanding China and fighting for democracy and freedom, so he joined the education field after graduating from the University of Hong Kong.

After the 1989 pro-democracy movement, Zhang Ruihui hoped to inherit the concept of understanding China and fighting for democracy and freedom, so he joined the education field after graduating from the University of Hong Kong.

In 1992, the Bureau of Evaluation and Appraisal added General Education and other Advanced Supplementary Level (AS-Level) subjects. Zhang Ruihui persuaded the principal to open a general education and has officially taught general education since 1995.

I’m very fortunate to participate in the Liberal Studies Department. At first, the society had questions about the Liberal Studies Department, but the front-line work saw a lot of non-traditional factors. The most rare thing is that the entire society has participated in recent years. Scholars, universities, non-governmental organizations, media, and even channels The Department of Affairs provides learning opportunities and materials. This process is a rare one, and it is also a manifestation of civil society.

Denying Liberal Studies is a retrogression in education

Zhang Ruihui recalled that in the early days of society, there were doubts about Liberal Studies, but looking back on his teaching career over the years, he felt honored to be a teacher of Liberal Studies. He also felt sorry and puzzled for the government’s denial of Liberal Studies. "The government feels political interest. It is important to the development of education in Hong Kong. The general education itself is a dynamic educational development. The government has denied it with one blow, and history will judge those in power. This is undoubtedly a retrogression in education."

Zhang Ruihui said that the school’s work has been going smoothly. It is not because of political environment or pressure to retire early. "I retired early because of my personal reasons. There is no pressure on the school or school organization." (Photo)

Asked whether early retirement is related to the killing of general education?

Zhang Ruihui reiterated that "the main reason for leaving or staying is for personal reasons." However, in the past year, the education sector in Hong Kong has changed considerably. The teaching space has been greatly narrowed. Teachers are facing political pressure. Narrowing, the red line around, the government has made the education profession disappear."

Zhang Ruihui said bluntly that the school work has been going smoothly, but the students who are still enrolled in Liberal Studies have to retire early for personal reasons. He hopes that the education staff will take advantage of the spare space and stick to their posts. ..... People who stay low may not speak out, but many of them are very motivated."

Zhang Ruihui will serve as a director of the Education Association until 2022. He said that after retirement, he will take a good rest before making plans, and will stay in the Education Association to continue to speak out for unreasonable things and education policies.
