Fewer crimes than in the previous year and a high clearance rate: the citizens of the district can feel relatively safe.

This emerges from the police report on the crime situation 2020, which has now been presented.

However, the officials were faced with new challenges - also as a result of the corona pandemic.

District

- Criminals do not have a good life in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. Because the risk of being caught and held accountable is pretty high. The clearance rate last year was 73.4 percent - and was thus a little better than in the previous year. That means: three out of four offenses are resolved. “That is a peak value. We can be proud of that, ”emphasized Robert Kopp, Chief of Police Headquarters Upper Bavaria South, during a press conference. The national average is significantly worse and is 57.2 percent.

Together with District Administrator Anton Speer (Free Voters), Kopp presented the report on the 2020 security situation to the district authority.

His summary: "The district is a very safe place." This was preceded by an exchange of information behind closed doors, in which representatives of the police and the district office took part.

4015 crimes between Staffelsee and Karwendel last year

In 2020, a total of 4015 criminal offenses were counted in the region between Staffelsee and Karwendel (see info box below) - compared to 2019, a decrease of 199.If the offenses related to immigration law are excluded, the figure was 3774 (2019: 3842).

The so-called frequency figure, which in this country is 4541 per 100,000 inhabitants, serves as a yardstick for the crime rate.

For comparison: in the whole of Bavaria there are 4,528.

Last year 2275 suspects were identified in the district.

The proportion of foreigners was 871 (38.3 percent).

408 were immigrants, 357 children, adolescents and adolescents.

When looking at these statistics, however, it must be taken into account that some areas have an unreported number and that the determination to investigate sometimes plays a certain role.

Law enforcement officers faced with completely new tasks due to a pandemic: 1,800 reports of corona violations

The corona crisis naturally left its mark. If only because certain offenses - for example fights in and in front of night clubs - did not occur at least temporarily due to the lockdowns. On the other hand, the law enforcement officers were confronted with completely new tasks. The strict requirements for protection against infection, such as the contact restrictions and the mask requirement, had to be checked - a hell of a job. When punishing violations, it depends on the right sense of proportion, noted Kopp. Since the beginning of the pandemic (until the end of May 2021), according to the police president, there have been "only" 1,800 reports - with over 2,200 identified violations of the law.

No less easy: the many corona demos.

62 events of this kind have so far been registered in the district.

“They almost exploded,” reported Kopp.

It becomes difficult with operations of this kind when participants aim for provocations.

Then you have to intervene consistently, because: "What we are doing is health protection." The police have shown a lot of "sensitivity", remarked Speer.

Two areas are booming: Internet crime and “call center” fraud

The officials are worried, however, in two areas that are really booming: On the one hand, there is Internet crime. "This has meanwhile covered all areas of life," explains Kopp. It starts with fraud on Ebay and ends with child pornography and drug trafficking on the Darknet. On the other hand, unfortunately, people, especially senior citizens, fall for call center fraudsters again and again. They pretend to be police officers or family members in order to steal money or valuables. “This is a growing problem,” summarizes Kopp.

But there is also a positive development: burglaries fell significantly in 2020: 13 instead of 19 in the previous year.

Kopp does not believe in a corona effect.

Rather, he blames the intensive educational and investigative work for this.

The conclusion of the police chief from Rosenheim: "This is a huge success."
