The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced that more than 200 people have developed myocarditis after receiving the mRNA technology of the new crown vaccine. They are all 30 years of age or younger, and the number is more than the CDC itself expected.

The Fubitel vaccine vaccinated in Hong Kong also uses mRNA technology. The incident has aroused public concern about the safety of the vaccine, especially whether young people can continue to receive this vaccine.

However, some cardiologists pointed out that foreign patients with myocarditis still account for a small proportion of the vaccinated population, and generally speaking, 80% to 90% of myocarditis patients in Hong Kong can recover on their own, urging the public not to worry about the risk of vaccination.

The following will analyze one by one what is myocarditis.

Kong Fanyi: Myocarditis in foreign patients is not serious

Teenagers between the ages of 12 and 15 can make an appointment for vaccination with Fubitai starting today, and get an injection as soon as next Monday (14th).

The new crown vaccine clinical event assessment expert committee co-convened Kong Fanyi, who said that myocarditis in foreign vaccinators is still not common. The patient's condition is not serious and the response to treatment is good. The committee will pay close attention to the relevant situation.

Dr. Ye Boqiang, clinical associate professor of the Department of Child and Adolescent Sciences of the University of Hong Kong, said that although myocarditis in foreign countries is slightly higher than the background incidence rate, it has not been established that it is related to the vaccine because there may be multiple factors leading to the relevant situation. It can not be ruled out related to vaccines.

The government is expected to release data on the incidence of myocarditis in Hong Kong

Ye Boqiang said that according to his understanding, the Hospital Authority has compiled data on the incidence of myocarditis in Hong Kong and submitted it to the Department of Health. The Department will announce it soon. This data can be compared with the situation after vaccination in the future. The rate is higher than that in Western countries, so it may require attention. "However, the incidence rate is generally high. Each disease has seriousness, and differences can be seen first (relevance). If the disease is mild and it is a rare disease, it is more difficult to establish a disease. Relevance."

Ye Boqiang continued that Hong Kong will continue to monitor abnormal conditions after vaccination. Youth under the age of 16 can also be vaccinated next week and will also pay close attention to the situation.

He added that the incidence of myocarditis in Hong Kong has always been low, and most of the patients are more serious. However, cases seen in foreign countries have mild symptoms and recover quickly, which will not affect life-threatening. It is very different from the common myocarditis in Hong Kong.

Myocarditis is more common in young men

Cardiology specialist Liang Dazhi pointed out that myocarditis refers to inflammation of the heart muscle and is a common heart disease. Most people suffer from this disease due to viral infections. Although some people in foreign countries develop myocarditis after vaccination, it is more common in young men. But the situation is still relatively rare.

He said that in the past, the ratio of men to women with myocarditis was similar, and there was no particularly high-risk age range.

When asked whether other vaccines in the past would cause myocarditis, he said that the flu would cause myocarditis, but whether the flu vaccine would cause myocarditis, there is no conclusion. Although there are related cases, they are also rare, and if the injections are not given, he will suffer from myocarditis. Myocarditis is more likely to be caused by influenza or new coronary pneumonia.

1. Symptoms

Liang Dazhi pointed out that patients suffering from myocarditis will have chest pain, irregular heart rhythm, and may have fever. Some severe patients will have a weakened heart and even risk death.

He advises citizens to pay attention to chest tightness, palpitations, chest pain, dizziness, etc. after being vaccinated with the new crown vaccine, or to breathe after doing daily activities. If these conditions occur, they should seek medical attention.

Cardiologist Leung Tat-chih pointed out that 80 to 90% of myocarditis patients in Hong Kong can recover on their own, and appealed to the public not to worry about the risk of vaccination.

2. Severity

Liang Tat-chih said that some patients with myocarditis have mild symptoms and can recover on their own without seeking medical attention. Among the patients who seek medical attention, about eight or ninety adults can recover on their own, and only one or two adults are more severely ill.

3. Treatment

Liang Dazhi said that if myocarditis patients are more serious, they need to stay in the hospital for observation. Doctors will give supportive treatment. Some patients with weakened heart need to take medication, even implant heart assist devices, or need to change their hearts.

If myocarditis is triggered by an over-reaction of the immune system, the doctor will give immune system suppression drugs.

Students may have mild myocarditis after acupuncture or rare myocarditis.
