The US Consul General in Hong Kong Hanscom Smith said in an interview with Reuters this week that the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Act creates an atmosphere of "coercion" and threatens Hong Kong's freedom and its status as an international business center.

On the 10th, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress voted to pass the "Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law."

Chinese President Xi Jinping signed Presidential Decree No. 90 on the same day, and the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law will come into effect on the date of promulgation.

The Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law states that the People’s Republic of China opposes hegemonism and power politics, and opposes any country’s interference in China’s internal affairs under any pretext and in any way.

China has the right to take corresponding countermeasures against foreign countries that use various excuses or in accordance with their own laws to contain or suppress China, or impose discriminatory restrictive measures on Chinese citizens and organizations, or interfere in China's internal affairs.

The content of the new law also states that no organization or individual may implement or assist in the implementation of discriminatory restrictive measures taken by foreign countries against citizens and organizations.

Where organizations and individuals violate the provisions of the preceding paragraph and infringe upon the lawful rights and interests of Chinese citizens and organizations, Chinese citizens and organizations may file a lawsuit in the people's court in accordance with the law, requesting them to stop the infringement and compensate for losses.
