Canada announced Friday that it was giving up distributing the 300,000-dose batch of Johnson & Johnson's anti-Covid vaccine received earlier this year, due to "

concerns

" over its manufacture in a US laboratory.

This Janssen vaccine was approved by Ottawa in March and the first 300,000 doses were received the following month, but the Ministry of Health immediately suspended their distribution due to suspicions about the quality of the product.

"

Due to concerns raised about a drug substance developed at the Emerging BioSolutions facility in Baltimore, Maryland, Health Canada will not distribute the inventory received in order to protect the health and safety of Canadians and Canadian women,

”the ministry said in a press release.

This substance was "

contaminated with components from another vaccine

" at the time of manufacture and upon examination of the vials, Health Canada "

could not conclude

" that they met Canadian standards. A delegation will “

inspect

” the Maryland plant this summer and Canada will not accept any new vaccine deliveries from this facility until then, says Health Canada.

A few hours earlier, US health authorities had announced that "

several batches

" of Johnson & Johnson vaccines manufactured in this Baltimore plant would have to be discarded, or about 60 million doses according to the New York Times.

In total, Canada, a country of 38 million people, has ordered or reserved more than 400 million doses of various vaccines.

Four vaccines have so far been licensed in Canada: Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, but only the first three are used.

Long lagging behind the major Western countries, the vaccination campaign in Canada has accelerated in recent months.

As of Friday, nearly 64% of Canadians had received at least one dose, one of the best numbers in the world.
