At present, there are 38 beaches under the management of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in Hong Kong. According to the beach water quality data of the Environmental Protection Department, there are currently 6 first-class beaches in Hong Kong, and two of them are rated as 100% first-class for the whole year!

As for the most polluted beaches, they are concentrated in Tsuen Wan, that is, the water quality of the beaches is average.

Among the currently open beaches, 6 have a water quality rating for the entire year of 2020 at the first level, that is, a good level.

The first-class beaches include St. Stephen’s Bay Beach, South Bay Beach, Repulse Bay Beach, Shek O Beach, Hung Shing Yeh Beach and Upper Cheung Sha Beach, two of which are located on the outlying islands and the remaining four It is located in the Southern District.

The Environmental Protection Department announces the water quality ratings of various public beaches every week. There are four levels, one is the best and the fourth is the worst.

The water quality of beaches rated as Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3 and Grade 4 are good, fair, poor and very poor respectively.

Recent water quality of various beaches in Hong Kong:

According to the “Annual Beach Water Quality Report 2020” published by the Environmental Protection Department, the beaches in Tsuen Wan District have the worst water quality among the five districts. When the water quality of the seven beaches is inspected, 97% of the times, the water quality is of non-Class I.

On the contrary, the water quality of the beaches in the southern district of Hong Kong Island is the best among the five districts. Among the 10 beaches in the southern district, only 15% of the time the water quality is classified as non-first-class.

There are 5 beaches in Hong Kong that have not been rated as Grade 1 in 2020. They are the Fishing Bay Beach, Ma Wan Tung Wan Beach and Near Water Bay Beach in Tsuen Wan District, and Castle Peak Bay in Tuen Mun District. Beaches and Butterfly Beach.
