Climbers lose their grip on Untersberg and fall into the depths

As the Berchtesgaden police station writes in a press release, the 47-year-old from Nuremberg and a companion were out on the Untersberg near Marktschellenberg on Saturday afternoon. They wanted to climb the "Old South Face" on the Berchtesgadener Hochthron together. The accident must have happened on one of the last pitches. Either a grip gave way or the man slipped in his climbing shoes on grassy ground. The cause has not yet been conclusively clarified. In any case, the 47-year-old lost his footing and fell into the depths.

The man was secured with a rope, but an intermediate belay gave way and was torn out with it.

The climber fell around 40 meters.

His climbing partner was still able to hold him, but the crash must have been so severe that the man from Nuremberg died of his injuries on site.

His companion immediately made an emergency call and the mountain rescue service * Marktschellenberg set off together with the rescue helicopter * "Christoph 14".

The police investigate the scene of the accident - companions receive psychological support

First, the rescuers were able to recover the lifeless body of the 47-year-old.

Then the companion was also saved.

The two alarmed emergency doctors could only determine the death of the Nuremberg resident, as the press release continues.

Police mountain guides were then flown to the scene of the accident by a police helicopter in order to secure evidence and investigate the scene of the accident.

According to the first findings, it cannot be assumed that there was any third-party debt, according to the police.

The climbing partner - who had to watch the whole accident - was later looked after by a crisis intervention team.
