Will Bayrischzell get a wood chip-fired district heating network? An expert from the Oberland energy transition says yes - and so does the local council.

Will Bayrischzell get a wood chip-fired district heating network?

An expert from the Oberland energy transition says yes - and so does the local council.

Bayrischzell

- Andreas Scharli, trained heating engineer and energy consultant at Energiewende Oberland (EWO), has now presented a rough analysis and his experience of building such a system in the town center to the municipal council.

His conclusion: The conditions for building a so-called village heating system are “very good” and it could also be operated economically there.

Scharli has one location in mind: to the west of the B 307 alpine road, roughly at the level of Tannerfeld, in order to ensure easy access for woodchip deliveries.

From there, the town center could be connected to the former post office and the areas of Tannerhof as well as Sudelfeldstrasse and Wendelsteinstrasse.

A prerequisite is a sufficient number of subscribers on the respective line.

Later extensions are possible.

Citizens want to replace old oil heating systems

The idea for a district heating network for Bayrischzell has been around for a long time, emphasized Mayor Georg Kittenrainer.

"We have had a very well-functioning district heating network in Geitau for almost ten years, and it has proven itself." Citizens of Bayrischzell with old oil heating systems would also ask him again and again about what the community plans to do in the future in the area of energy supply, said Kittenrainer.

"The subject of district heating always comes up on the tray."

A few years ago, the community started a survey in the town to test the willingness there.

The EWO has evaluated the questionnaires: Currently 63 connection users would be enthusiastic about a local heating network.

“A big chunk in the heating sector,” says Scharli.

Because this would save 1,100 tons of CO2 per year.

There are grants from the Free State of Bavaria and the Bundesbank for the construction of the plant.

The federal government is promoting a conversion with 45 percent.

Scharli listed further advantages for homeowners: "The old oil tank is thrown out, you no longer have to worry about the fuel yourself, there is no more odor nuisance and the chimney sweeper is no longer needed."

Three boilers in the control center and buffer storage in each house

In the headquarters, Bayrischzell would need three boilers connected in series and a large buffer tank.

“This guarantees security of supply in the event that parts of the system fail.” The lines can be laid in stainless steel (“durable, but expensive”) or in plastic.

A buffer storage tank should be installed in the connected buildings in order to cushion consumption peaks.

According to Scharli, the greatest challenge is the search for an operator or investor. The expert advised the community itself not to take on this role. The tendering and awarding requirements are too complex and local craftsmen are not given a chance. A cooperative, on the other hand, has a high level of bureaucratic effort with "poor creditworthiness". On the other hand, the legal form of a GmbH, in which the municipality holds a maximum of 25 percent, has proven its worth.

Scharli's rough analysis calculated investment costs of around four million euros.

"These and the ongoing operating and maintenance costs must be refinanced through the connections." The implementation will take two to five years.

The local council unanimously approved the project.

As soon as the Corona situation allows, the community wants to invite citizens to an information event.
