The firefighting elements and mechanisms of the General Authority for the Management and Development of the Forest in Hama Governorate, in cooperation with the civil defense firefighting teams in Damascus, put out yesterday and today more than 12 fires that broke out in wheat fields or crop residues in the Al-Ghab area.
The Director of Natural Resources in the Authority, Engineer Fayez Al-Mohammed, explained in a statement to SANA reporter today that the largest fire that was controlled was a fire that broke out in a wheat field in the village of Al-Jaid and came over large areas without knowing or determining the reason behind its outbreak, pointing out that the firefighting teams are still continuing their operations. Extinguishing due to the presence of flashpoints that re-erupted due to strong winds.
For his part, Engineer Imad Al-Naasan, head of the plant production department in the authority, said in a similar statement that the areas of wheat fields damaged by the fire are estimated at about 200 dunams, most of them in a wheat field in the village of Al-Jaid.
Fires of agricultural crops, especially wheat and barley, usually occur at this time of the year with the approaching harvest dates, as a result of several reasons, including sparks flying from the harvesters during harvesting, burning of crop residues in nearby fields, or as a result of lit cigarette butts or were fabricated by unknown persons.
