The government will distribute 5,000 yuan electronic consumer vouchers to citizens. Details will be announced at the end of this month and applications will be accepted in July.
The Democratic Party held a press conference today (14) to announce the results of the consumer voucher poll.
The survey results showed that 80% of the respondents requested an increase to 10,000 yuan, and 65% of the elderly over the age of 60 did not use electronic consumer platforms other than Octopus.
Su Yiheng, deputy spokesman for the Democratic Party’s welfare policy, said that the results reflect the habit of many elderly people not using electronic consumer platforms and urge the government to issue cash to the elderly instead of electronic consumer vouchers.
The Democratic Party stated that the proposal had been written to the Financial Secretary Chen Maobo earlier, but it was not accepted, and it emphasized that it would write the results of the poll to Chen Maobo again.

Sixty-and-a-half of the elders over 60 do not have an electronic payment platform other than Octopus
From the 3rd to the 12th of this month, the Democratic Party used the telephone to interview 985 citizens.
The results showed that 80% of the interviewees asked for an increase to 10,000 yuan, and more than 70% of them believed that the government-provided 5,000 yuan consumer vouchers should be issued all at once.
Zou Yingheng, deputy spokesperson for the Democratic Party’s welfare policy, said that the results reflect that most citizens want to receive consumer coupons at once, rather than in two or even five installments.
Another 85% of the respondents agreed that the government would extend the distribution of consumer vouchers to people under the age of 18.
Zeng Ziming, deputy spokesperson for the Democratic Party’s youth policy, believes that during the epidemic, many students need to purchase additional learning equipment. He therefore hopes that the government will follow suit and benefit Hong Kong citizens under the age of 18.
The government announced earlier that it would use the four electronic consumer platforms of Octopus, "WeChat Pay", "Alipay" and "Tap & Go" to issue consumer vouchers.
According to the survey results, 65% of respondents over the age of 60 do not have an electronic payment platform other than Octopus, nor do they have the habit of using electronic consumer platforms.
The Democratic Party urges the government to issue cash to the elderly to replace electronic consumer vouchers.
The survey also pointed out that 27% of citizens use PayMe, and only about 10% or less than one adult use "WeChat Pay", "Alipay" and "Tap & Go."
The Democratic Party’s economic and business policy spokesperson Chen Baoming said that the government should actively consider including PayMe as a platform for issuing consumer vouchers.
Regarding the government's intention to promote electronic payment platforms through electronic consumer coupons, Chen Baoming believes that the government should study how to reduce electronic payment handling fees, otherwise it would be a stimulus for growth.
