[Taishan Nuclear Power Plant/Nuclear Leak/Radiation/Observatory] CNN reported today (14) that it had obtained a letter from a French company operating the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant to the US Energy Department. The letter mentioned Taishan, Guangdong. Nuclear power plants may have nuclear leaks, but the safety department continues to improve the acceptable level of radiation detection on the periphery of nuclear power plants, so that nuclear power plants can continue to operate, and the current detection level has exceeded French standards.

CNN quoted sources as saying that the US government assessed that the nuclear power plant had not reached a "crisis level."

The Hong Kong Observatory has continued to monitor environmental radiation levels since 1987 to prevent nearby nuclear power plants from causing adverse effects on Hong Kong.

The Observatory will update the radiation levels recorded at each monitoring station hourly on its website. According to the data on the website as of 4 pm today, the radiation levels in Hong Kong have remained at normal levels in the past 24 hours without significant changes.

The Taishan nuclear power plant was accused by the French company that its radiation detection level has exceeded the French standard, but the mainland security department has continuously improved the safety level of peripheral monitoring, so that the power plant can continue to operate.

Environmental Radiation Monitoring Project

The CNN report mentioned that French companies had requested the United States to help respond to radiation detection levels exceeding French standards. The US government has discussed this with the French government and experts, and has also contacted the mainland government.

The mainland government and the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant did not respond to the incident, and the US government did not disclose the results of the assessment.

Officials from the National Security Council (NSC), the State Department, and the Department of Energy mentioned that according to nuclear accident-related treaties, if the mainland people are at risk of a nuclear accident, the United States will be required for relevant information.

The French company admits that it is providing solutions. The nuclear power plant is currently operating safely and will also evaluate with experts how to deal with potential problems.

In 1987, the Hong Kong Observatory started an environmental radiation monitoring program for the Guangdong/Lingao Nuclear Power Plant, which was about to be put into operation at that time. The relevant environmental gamma radiation level figures will be updated on the Internet every hour.

Many Hong Kong citizens are worried that if a nuclear leak occurs, Hong Kong will be severely affected, and the report has aroused discussion among a large number of netizens.

In fact, the Hong Kong Observatory started an environmental radiation monitoring program in 1987 for the Guangdong/Lingao Nuclear Power Plant, which was going to be put into operation at that time, to monitor whether Hong Kong would be adversely affected.

The monitoring plan is based on man-made radionuclides, and keep an eye out for changes.

The radiation monitoring network is composed of 12 monitoring stations to obtain environmental gamma radiation level figures. The relevant figures will be transmitted to the observatory headquarters via an independent communication network, and an alarm will be triggered as long as the level of any one monitoring station exceeds a preset value.

The Observatory's website displays the hourly environmental gamma radiation level of each monitoring station in a map, and also displays the change in the environmental gamma radiation level of each monitoring station in the past 24 hours in the form of a line graph.

The Observatory mentioned that the hourly average environmental gamma radiation dose rate in Hong Kong generally ranges from 0.06 to 0.3 microsieverts per hour. The data may vary in time due to weather, and regional differences may be due to rocks and soils. Contains different radioactive materials.
