His death was like an electric shock.

And pushed the government to organize a Grenelle of domestic violence.

Two years and three months after the death of Julie Douib, the former companion of the latter appears since Thursday, June 10 and until Wednesday, June 16 before the Assize Court of Haute-Corse, in Bastia.

Tried for "murder", Bruno Garcia faces life imprisonment.

On Sunday March 3, 2019, the 34-year-old young woman succumbed to several 9mm shots in her apartment in L'Île-Rousse (Haute-Corse).

In the process, the father of her two boys aged eight and ten, from whom she had been separated for six months, became a prisoner with the gendarmerie.

Indicted for “murder”, he was remanded in custody in Borgo prison.

A strong emotion follows the death of Julie Douib, buried in Monticello.

Several tributes were paid to him on March 9, in L'Île-Rousse as well as in Vaires, in Seine-et-Marne.

It is in this small town, where she grew up, that her two children now live with her parents, Lucien and Violette Douib.

If the latter are present at the hearing this month of June, their two grandsons do not attend.

The death of the young woman has national repercussions.

At the beginning of July, Marlène Schiappa, then Secretary of State for Equality between Women and Men, receives relatives of Julie Douib.

A few days later, a "march against feminicides" was held in Paris.

The next day, Marlène Schiappa announces the organization of a Grenelle on domestic violence, which opens the following September and leads to several measures.

"He killed me"

The black series of marital murders does not end, however.

And on June 9, the government announced the implementation of

"an arsenal of six new measures"

following an inspection mission carried out after the murder of a young woman in Mérignac.

It is in this context that the trial of Bruno Garcia opens on June 10 at the Bastia courthouse, on the gates of which was hung a banner demanding

"Justice for Julie"

.

The first day of the hearing is marked by the testimony of two women present in L'Île-Rousse on March 3, 2019. From the parking lot of the residence, the first saw part of the scene, which took place on the balcony of the victim's apartment.

The second crossed Bruno Garcia on the stairs, then collected the last words of Julie Douib:

"He killed me"

.

On Friday, the accused, now 44, is questioned on the facts.

Recognizing having killed his former companion, he however assures that he did not premeditate his gesture.

"I take responsibility for what happened, I'll take the trouble for it."

But I did not go [to Julie Douib, editor's note] for that, ”he

declared at the hearing, according to AFP.

The hearing resumes this Monday after a weekend break. During the last three days of the trial, the civil parties will be heard before the personality of the accused is investigated, in particular with the help of a personality investigator, a psychologist and a psychiatrist. Then there will be the pleadings of the civil parties, indictment, defense pleadings, last words of the accused, deliberation and finally verdict.
