Karlsfeld took part in the bicycle climate test of the ADFC (General German Bicycle Club) for the first time.

How bike-friendly is the community?

That was the core question of the investigation.

Answer: OK.

Karlsfeld

- The ADFC (General German Bicycle Club) offers cities, municipalities and districts the opportunity to participate in an investigation year after year.

The question to be answered is how bike-friendly the municipality is.

The prerequisite for municipalities and cities with around 20,000 inhabitants was always that at least 50 cyclists complete the questionnaire.

That worked for the first time in Karlsfeld in 2020.

117 women and men took part.

In the overall assessment, Karlsfeld received a grade of 3.7.

The award was based on the school grading system - one is the best, six the worst.

With 3.7, Karlsfeld ranks 91st out of 415 places in Germany and tenth place out of 49 places in Bavaria in its size class (20,000 to 50,000 inhabitants) - each well above average.

Three points were rated particularly positively in Karlsfeld: the winter service on cycle paths, the recent promotion of bicycles overall and the cleaning of the cycle paths.

The good accessibility of the town center for cyclists and the fact that cyclists generally make rapid progress in the community were also rated positively.

But there are also three particularly bad criteria: open one-way streets in the opposite direction, too many bicycle thefts and no public bicycles.

Twelve percent of those surveyed said that they enjoyed cycling in Karlsfeld and gave it a school grade of one.

23 percent gave a two, only six percent opted for a six.

How safe you can feel as a cyclist in Karlsfeld was rated very differently.

Five percent of the participants gave grade one, grade two 16 percent.

For grades three and four it was 25 percent each.

A five gave 20 percent, a six nine percent.

Karlsfeld officially wants to become a bicycle-friendly municipality

The wish of those responsible in the municipal council and Karlsfeld administration is to do more for cyclists. In 2019, the building committee of the municipal council made the fundamental decision that Karlsfeld should officially become a bicycle-friendly municipality and thus join the working group bicycle-friendly municipalities in Bavaria (AGFK Bayern). Investments in the appropriate infrastructure are a prerequisite. And that is not as easy as recently made clear. The finance committee of the municipal council took the 470,000 euros planned for new bike racks at the train station out of the budget in 2021 (we reported). The reason is simple: Karlsfeld has to save hard.

Karlsfeld has already met another requirement for joining the AGFK Bayern: an official bicycle consultant has been appointed.

The task was taken over by local councilor Hubert Trinkl from the SPD.

The passionate cyclist emphasizes that Karlsfeld is "predestined for cycling" due to its small community area.

That gives hope that the climate test rating will get even better in future years.

The Alliance for Karlsfeld wants to advance this and has requested that the results of the bicycle climate test be presented and discussed in the Environment and Transport Committee.

"The aim is to" learn from the results relative strengths and weaknesses of Karlsfeld and derive short- and medium-term improvement possibilities for cycling in Karlsfeld, "said parliamentary group spokesman Adrian Heim.
