Christelle Morancais: "There is no conspiracy, I am a right-wing woman"

2021-06-16T12:40:19.405Z

The outgoing president of Pays-de-la-Loire responds to Figaro after rumors of a rapprochement with the Walkers aroused by an image of her sharing a beer with Edouard Philippe on a beach in La Baule.

LE FIGARO .- Why did your teams broadcast this image of you with Edouard Philippe, eight days before the first round of the regional?

Christelle MORANÇAIS -.

I was at the jumping de la Baule where Edouard Philippe was signing.

He contacted me for a beer.

He is someone whom I hold in high esteem and with whom I have worked a lot, particularly in the context of the contract for the future, then this health crisis.

It is a moment shared between two people who appreciate each other.

There is no conspiracy or anything hidden behind it.

We were surrounded by a lot of people and if there had been a place to prepare things it wouldn't have happened on a beach.

Some, on the right in particular, see in it the announcement of a merger with the candidate of the Marchers, François de Rugy.

What do you answer?

My position is very, very clear.

It is the Ligériens who will decide on the evening of the first round.

I'm not driven by polls, comments, and commentators.

What I want above all is a large participation.

You are in the lead in the first round but an alliance between environmentalists and the PS threatens your re-election.

What will be your strategy on the evening of the first round?

I approach this election with great serenity, determination and humility.

But I see, indeed, the candidate of Jean-Luc Mélenchon boasting at 32% (Matthieu Orphelin, Editor's note), I just recall that they had lost the region in 2015 being at 38%.

So there is nothing to boast about ... As for the strategy of the second round, for the moment I am in the first and I do not wish to leave this region to left radicals supported by Mélenchon, knowing that Mr. Orphelin did not condemn his latest controversial remarks very much.

My obsession is clear: helping the Pays-de-la-Loire region win over.

Nothing else.

How do you observe the Marchers campaign?

The context is particular. We can't have meetings, the meetings are a bit difficult, but I am making my way as I have been doing for three years. Since I took over from Bruno Retailleau, I have given everything. Today, I put my mandate on the table and I have no other ambition than to save my region. Above all, in this context of crisis, it is very important that this region, in which it is good to live, to undertake and to study, continues to be on the podiums at the national level. Today there is a risk of tipping. I therefore appeal for a strong mobilization to avoid it. I was extremely marked by the municipal elections: when we see 70% in certain cities, when cities like Bordeaux, Poitiers or Lyon change, itis because our constituents did not vote. Me, I do not want to leave the region to these left radicals who would break the dynamic. This election is very important. The presidential election will take place in a year. Today, it is a question of mobilizing on a strong regional vision, with important skills. We absolutely must mobilize because on June 28, it will be too late! My position is clear: I am for meat in canteens, Christmas trees and the Tour de France. I don't want to leave this region to extremists.with important skills. How did you analyze the situation in Paca at Renaud Muselier and the earthquake caused at Les Républicains after an alliance exploited by the macronists, Jean Castex in the lead?

I don't want to comment on Paca. Whatever the political parties, everyone makes comments on the regional without being a candidate. If they were, I would like to know what strategy they would adopt. Today, we must trust the elected officials who present themselves. Seeing a prime minister take the front line in a regional election, that appeals to me. As I already said the day after the Europeans, I joined this party when the UMP was created because the wealth of a party is the presence of several sensibilities. They must be respected because the right is diverse. It is not a political line issue. What we sorely lack today is a chef. Since we don't have any more, since we don'tmore Nicolas Sarkozy, there is a total void and we get lost. It just takes someone who can show leadership and bang their fists on the table.

But do you understand that this display with Edouard Philippe one year before the presidential election could disturb part of your political family?

I tell them it's okay.

I have a lot of admiration for the man and I say it openly.

Having simple, direct and frank relations with a government makes a lot of things easier, especially in times of crisis.

I don't have to be ashamed to share a beer with Edouard Philippe.

Until proven otherwise, he is not in government and he is on the right.

And I prefer to drink a beer with Edouard Philippe than with Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

Could Edouard Philippe be an opponent of the right?

He is from the right.

I do not know if he is campaigning for Emmanuel Macron.

He is the mayor of Le Havre and when he passes through the region, sends me a message to share a beer with me, I don't hide.

But we must stop seeing conspiracies everywhere, our fellow citizens can no longer stand that.

Some will find you naive ...

No, I am not naive, I am just in the field. I am not in offices or assemblies in Paris. In three years, I have done 250,000 kilometers. Just yesterday morning, at the Le Mans market, people told me that the important thing was not to be on the right or on the left, but to act for the region. When 70% of voters abstain from municipal elections, it is because they have the impression of being abandoned by politicians. I do not know how long it will last but as long as I am in politics, I will lead this fight because it is impossible to have such a gap between Paris and the territories. We must stop the small political calculations. For this election, I built my list without being able to tell you precisely what is the distribution between those who support me,which validate my project and my assessment, from LR to Centrists to UDI via Modem. What drives me are the people and their skills. This does not prevent me from having real convictions. I am a woman of the right and I take it completely. I am for entrepreneurial freedom, economic rigor and when I hear the idea of an RSA for young people, it makes me mad because I have another ambition for our youth.hear the idea of an RSA for young people, it makes me mad because I have another ambition for our youth.hear the idea of an RSA for young people, it makes me mad because I have another ambition for our youth.

A few days before the first round, how do you feel?

I see good momentum but the mobilization will be decisive.

The turnout will make this election.
