No searching for a parking space, fresh air and exercise: there are many good reasons to get on a bike.

With “city cycling” there is something else: every kilometer you drive counts in order to achieve a good result in the competition.

The city of Schongau is taking part for the second time.

Schongau

- bike after bike is lined up in the small garage. Set up carefully along the right side. Almost all of the nine places on the bike racks are occupied. Schongau's town hall employees make good use of the offer to be able to safely park their bikes - and to do without the car. "That is a concern of the mayor," says Alexander Erhard, employee in administration. After all, cycling is healthy and environmentally friendly. No wonder that the city of Schongau is also taking part in the “City Cycling” campaign this year. From June 19th to July 9th, people will pedal hard again in order to collect as many kilometers as possible.

Last year Schongau took part in the Germany-wide competition for the first time.

Anyone interested can register and report the kilometers they have covered within a specified period of 21 days.

The aim is for participants to leave their car behind and get to know the benefits of cycling.

In addition, local politicians should also explicitly participate in order to see where the cycling network can still be improved.

Last year 37 participants were registered in Schongau, now there should be many more

In Schongau, 37 participants registered at the premiere last year, reporting 7,238 kilometers.

This year the goal is set higher: “We want to crack the 100 participant mark,” says Erhard, coordinator of Schongau city cycling.

The chances are good: 84 people had already been registered by Sunday.

Anyone who lives, works, volunteers there, attends a daycare center or school can start for Schongau - the children's parents are also allowed to participate - or belong to an association.

All kilometers that are collected for Schongau “count towards the district,” explains Erhard.

Schongau can compete with Peiting or Peißenberg

Schongau still gets its own evaluation - and can thus compete with other participating municipalities such as Peiting or Peißenberg. Further teams are being formed within the city. The town hall, for example, provides one, as does the Pfaffenwinkel secondary school. With the latter, there are already indications that cycling is particularly busy there: More than 30 participants, i.e. almost half, are currently registered for them. "It is really well represented," praised Erhard. For daycare centers and schools there will also be a separate evaluation of who can manage the most kilometers. "As an incentive."

If you don't feel you belong to an existing group and don't have anyone who would like to collect kilometers with you, there is an open team that anyone can join.

“Nobody has to drive alone,” emphasizes the town hall employee.

What is more, it doesn't matter which bike you own.

"Every kilometer counts, whether on a mountain bike or an e-bike."

Registration via the Internet

You can register for city cycling via the Internet.

Reporting the kilometers as well.

The tour can even be recorded using the corresponding app so that the kilometers are automatically recorded.

If you don't have internet, you can contact Erhard.

He then sends a registration form and also enters the kilometers achieved.

Whether online or not - all data must be available by July 16, otherwise they can no longer be taken into account.

But the goal is of course that the lively cycling continues after the competition.

"We want to draw attention to the fact that the bike is a great means of transportation," says Erhard.

And motivate them “to leave the car standing still as often as possible.

Regardless of whether privately or professionally ”.

Registration
