Apparently at the last moment, Argentina's security authorities arrested the Chilean ex-military man Walther Klug Rivera, who was convicted of 23 murders.
The retired colonel was arrested on Saturday near his hotel in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, the Argentine government said.
Now he should be extradited to Chile.
According to the Chilean police, Klug Rivera was just about to leave the hotel - probably to avoid prosecution again.
The Argentine authorities became aware of Klug Rivera this month while trying to board a flight to Spain.
Because the immigration authorities found irregularities in his passport, he was not allowed to leave the country.
In 2014, the ex-military was sentenced to ten years in prison for his crimes during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet Chile's Supreme Court.
Under Pinochet, he ran the number three prison camp in Los Angeles, Chile, and is held responsible for the murder of 23 people.
In order to avoid his sentence in Chile, Klug Rivera entered Argentina illegally, explained the Argentine Interior Minister Eduardo de Pedro on the online service Twitter.
According to media reports, Klug Rivera is said to have lived in Rhineland-Palatinate for several years.
During Pinochet's reign from 1973 to 1990, at least 3,200 people were murdered in Chile or have been missing since then.
An estimated 38,000 people were victims of torture.
