" and placed in pre-trial detention, the public prosecutor of Clermont-Ferrand, Eric Maillaud, told AFP.

The man, who wanted to acquire French nationality, had convinced the young woman several months ago to marry him, with the promise to give him 15,000 euros according to the latter. She told investigators that they had made an appointment together with a registrar from Puy-en-Velay. The young adult added that following physical violence and rape which led her to find herself pregnant, she had told him that she wanted to undergo a voluntary termination of pregnancy.

whose white marriage project had taken the turn of a forced marriage

, ”according to a source close to the investigation.
