The Venezuelan newspaper

El Nacional will

be printed again after more than two and a half years, announced its general manager Jorge Makriniotis.

The new printed edition will come out on August 3 and coincides with the 79th anniversary of the newspaper, critical of the government of the questioned President Nicolás Maduro.

The newspaper stopped circulating on December 15, 2018 due to the lack of newsprint, according to its editors at that time.

And what little role there was, they claimed, was controlled by groups linked to the Executive Power.

The Maduro government imposed serious obstacles to access these inputs during the exchange control, which was in force between February 2003 and May 2019. A state-owned company centralized the importation of newsprint with preferential dollars.

Faced with the crisis in the business model of the press and the conflicts with the Chavista regime, many media outlets were forced to stop printing because they were unable to purchase supplies.

El Nacional

has found an option to continue reporting through its website and social networks, but in recent years it went from having more than 1,000 employees to less than 200, says its general manager.

More than 800 people lost their jobs.

Makriniotis warns that this figure could increase as a result of recent judicial measures against the outlet.

The general manager of the newspaper says that they will have allied printers to circulate again, although he stressed that they will not need details for security reasons.

Those interested in obtaining

El Nacional

printed will have to pay a subscription of $ 45.60 per month to receive the copies.

The anniversary edition will cost $ 10 and will offer quarterly, semi-annual and annual packages.

A month ago a court seized the main headquarters of the newspaper in Caracas for the lawsuit for moral damages whose ruling favored the deputy Diosdado Cabello, the powerful vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela.

On June 10, the defense of El Nacional showed a court document stating that the amount of the fine that they must pay to compensate Cabello had gone from US $ 13.36 million to US $ 30.05 million.

The payment is calculated in petros, the Venezuelan cryptocurrency, which has a value reference with respect to the dollar.

In the document, the amount to be paid is 533,250 petros.
