Housing, an ever heavier burden on household budgets

The OECD is alarmed by the jump in this expenditure item in recent years, fueled by the rise in real estate prices.


It is a thorn in the side of households in many developed countries.

Access to affordable housing

"is becoming more and more difficult",

warns the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in a report.

“Housing is much more than where we live,”

points out Mathias Cormann, Secretary General of the OECD.

It is the most important item in the household budget, and a key element of economic performance as well as well-being. ”

With real estate prices soaring around the world in recent years, the weight of housing in OECD household spending has increased by nearly 20% in a decade, from 2005 to 2015 Households then devoted nearly a third of their income to this expenditure (31%).

The trend has not improved since.

The difficulties in finding housing no longer spare the middle classes, even if the burden is heavier for disadvantaged households, underlines the institution.
