In Budapest on Monday around 5,000 people demonstrated against a planned law that would restrict the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender people.
The Hungarian government wants school talks and educational books no longer to evaluate homosexuality or transsexuality as something positive or normal in the future.
Companies should be banned from showing solidarity with homosexuals in their advertising.
Quotes:
“There are children who are stuck in a vicious circle and cannot come out. They should be given the opportunity to come out and talk about it without fear. "
“Many children grow up not being accepted at home. At least in schools there should be places where they are accepted. But this new law would limit that too. "
The protests in front of the Hungarian Parliament were aimed directly at the MPs.
They are likely to approve the bill on Tuesday.
Zsolt Szekeres, Hungarian Helsinki Committee:
“You, who are talking behind me about another right to be taken away from me, you are wrong. Yes, we have to protect the children, but from you! "
The protesting organizations, including Amnesty International, fear that the new law will severely curtail freedom of expression and children's rights in Hungary.
Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party has tied the proposed bans to a widely supported law that severely punishes pedophilia.
That makes it difficult for Orbán's opponents to vote against the new bill.
Zsolt Szekeres, Hungarian Helsinki Committee:
“The government claims to be cracking down on pedophilia. Driven by power interests, they tear families apart. Any child who is molested by gay or transphobics and does not dare to ask for help will suffer because of the MPs. These will vote for the hateful legislation. "
As early as December, Hungary took action against homosexuals with a legislative package that met with international criticism. Among other things, it prohibits the registration of gender changes and prohibits homosexuals from adopting children.
