Israel: far-right march in East Jerusalem authorized, tensions feared

2021-06-17T02:54:32.201Z

This Monday evening, the new Minister of Internal Security, Omer Bar-Lev, decided to maintain the demonstration.

It's a little surprise.

The new Israeli government gave the green light Monday evening to a controversial march Tuesday by nationalist and far-right Jewish activists in East Jerusalem, the holding of which in the Palestinian sector of the Holy City raises fears of further violence.

Scheduled for departure last Thursday, the march was postponed to Tuesday by the government of Benjamin Netanyahu despite threats from the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas of a further escalation if it was maintained.

Israel has since had a new government, led by right-wing nationalist leader Naftali Bennett, who allied with centrist Yair Lapid in a coalition that ended 12 years of uninterrupted rule by Netanyahu.

And Monday evening, the new Minister of Internal Security, Omer Bar-Lev, decided to maintain the demonstration: "The police are ready and we will do everything in our power to preserve the delicate fabric of coexistence (...) ", Said his services in a statement.

Negotiated route

After the new government took office, the organizers feared a ban on the march, but the Minister of Police maintained that "the right to demonstrate is a right for everyone in a democracy", to justify his decision to maintain it. .

This "march of the flags", at the call of several figures of the Israeli nationalist extreme right, in particular the deputy Itamar Ben Gvir, was to bring together hundreds of people in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Its course, however, was established after negotiations between its organizers and the Israeli police in the hope of avoiding clashes with the Palestinians.

The purpose of the march is to mark "Jerusalem day", commemorating for the Israelis the "reunification" of the city in 1967, but which for the Palestinians symbolizes the conquest and annexation of East Jerusalem.

What to ignite the powders.

It was initially supposed to be held on May 10, but it was canceled in the wake of tensions in East Jerusalem, the scene in May of violent protests against Israeli colonization that sparked a war of 11 days between Hamas and Israel.

Hamas last week "warned" Israel against retaliation if the march approached the Palestinian sector of Jerusalem, including the Mosques Esplanade, Islam's third holiest site.
