Mexico has called on Israel to extradite writer and former diplomat Andres Roemer, accused of rape and sexual assault, the Mexico City prosecutor's office said on Monday.

This request was made under the "
principle of international reciprocity
" and enjoys the support of the Attorney General's office and the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, prosecutor Ernestina Godoy said. "
We hope to achieve his arrest and transfer to Mexico so that he can be brought before a judge as soon as possible,
" she said.
The Mexican government had previously announced that the ex-diplomat, of Mexican and Israeli nationality, was wanted by Interpol at the request of the Mexican government, following an arrest warrant from the Superior Court of Justice in Mexico City.
Charges against Mr Roemer, around 60 according to a women's rights group, have escalated since February when dancer Itzel Schnaas accused him of sexual assault.

The intellectual denied "
categorically
" this first accusation on Twitter before withdrawing from social networks as the allegations against him multiplied. According to the latter, the former official used to summon his victims to his home or office for professional reasons. Andres Roemer, 57, served as Mexican Consul in San Francisco, United States. He also carried out philanthropic actions and was a goodwill ambassador for UNESCO and the UN organization severed its relations with him when the accusations multiplied.
