The drinking water sector in Deir ez-Zor governorate has witnessed a remarkable improvement since the governorate was liberated from terrorism and recovered after covering large areas with water pumping stations that were rehabilitated and put into service despite the extent of sabotage caused by terrorism.
The Director of the Public Establishment for Drinking Water in Deir Ezzor, Engineer Rabie Al-Ali, said in a statement to SANA reporter that the Corporation is working to secure potable water for all areas of the governorate, especially those liberated from terrorism, through the main and model water stations, which number 67 out of 71 stations in the liberated areas. Work is currently underway to rehabilitate two stations that will enter service soon.
Al-Ali indicated that the number of water pumping stations that were put into service increased from one station in 2017 to 33 in 2018, and reached 67 stations at the present time, including 9 stations in the city, all operating on electric power, and 44 stations in the eastern countryside, 28 of which work on electricity and 16 on electricity. Diesel and 6 stations in the western countryside, 4 of which run on electricity, two on diesel, and 8 stations in the northern countryside, all of which run on electricity.
He pointed out that the total production capacity of all stations amounts to 17,080 cubic meters per hour, covering the needs of the people in the city's neighborhoods and the countryside of the governorate liberated from terrorism, explaining that the foundation's workshops are also working on maintaining main and branch lines in all regions, as it recently completed the implementation of a number of projects in cooperation with organizations International.
Among these projects, he continued, the project to rehabilitate the mountain reservoirs with a capacity of 15,500 cubic meters with catastrophes and contribute to increasing the stability of the water network and ensuring high and constant pressure of drinking water towards the city of Deir ez-Zor due to the high level of the reservoirs from the city’s neighborhoods by about 35 meters and the calibration of the distribution of the water compressor in all neighborhoods Strengthening the water supply towards the eastern neighborhoods, and the reservoirs contribute to providing a reserve of drinking water to feed the city in case of emergency. This project was implemented in cooperation with the Danish Refugee Council.
Al-Ali pointed out that among the projects is also the implementation of the project to replace the old water lines and the implementation of new lines of polyethylene in the neighborhoods of Al-Hamidiyah, the old airport and Al-Qusour, while the rehabilitation works of the 17th April station and Al-Sham Road stations in the city and Al-Q`tah water station in the Al-Bukamal countryside continue, as well as the implementation of the replacement of a water line. A 6-inch diameter main plastic with a length of about 2 km in the town of Marat in the northern countryside of the governorate, and the work of replacing the main and secondary network lines in the Al-Omal and Al-Dahiya neighborhoods, where the completion rates in these projects have reached advanced stages.
Al-Ali stressed that the water pumped into homes is sterile and safe, and it is periodically checked by technicians in the institution’s laboratories, and it conforms to the required and approved specifications.
