A US House of Representatives committee today released documents from the Department of Justice detailing attempts by former US President Donald Trump and his chief of staff, as well as other allies, to pressure the department to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Reuters quoted the House Oversight and Reform Committee as saying that records from the Justice Department revealed a series of attempts by Trump, his top aide Mark Meadows and a private attorney outside the administration to pressure the department to deal with false accusations made by the former Republican president about the election.

Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney said: "These documents show that Trump tried to corrupt the most important law enforcement agency in our country in a blatant attempt to nullify an election he lost."

These documents come at a time when US lawmakers continue to investigate the attack by Trump supporters on the Capitol building on January 6 to try to obstruct the ratification of Democrat Joe Biden's victory in the elections.
