It is a traditional Chinese folk custom to burn clothes and worship gods on major festivals. However, if it is not handled properly, fire alarms are prone to occur.

It was the Dragon Boat Festival in Cheung Fat Village, Tsing Yi yesterday (14th). Someone illegally burned clothes on the back stairs, but the appliance used was a pressure cooker device. The neighbourhood involved even went out after the fire was set in the pot and almost caused a fire, which was alarmed. Firefighters came to fight the fire. Some district councillors pointed out that the neighbourhood has the right to burn incense to the gods, but the premise should be safety first. Residents are urged to abide by the Housing Department’s recommendations and go to the open space outside the building when burning the ghost.

The stone floor of the back stairs was burned to black by high heat

Kwai Tsing District Councillor Liu Zijie said that at noon yesterday, a neighbourhood in Cheung Fat Estate found that someone was suspected of using a pressure cooker as a clothing burning appliance on the stairs behind Chun Fat Building. During this time, the victim left the scene and allowed the fire to burn at the bottom of the pot. The fire and dense smoke continued to rise, and the neighbourhood notified the management office, and the security guards then notified the firefighter to extinguish the fire.

According to the clips and photos provided by the neighbourhood, there was a lot of thick smoke coming out of the bottom of the pot. The body of the pot was burnt to the extent that it was difficult to handle. A pool of black viscous material was left underground. It was suspected to be a plastic shell that had been melted by high heat. The stone ground was also spread by heat afterwards, causing serious blackening. If no one cares about the fire, the consequences will be disastrous.

Liu Zijie pointed out that in the past, although some people would burn clothes on the back stairs, most of them used chemical treasure pans or ordinary iron utensils. He pointed out that using a pressure cooker to burn clothes is like "arson fire", which is undoubtedly more dangerous. Treasure bucket, urged neighbourhoods to burn clothes in a suitable place, such as an open place outside the building, put the clothes paper in a safe metal container to burn, and after the worship is completed, the ash will be properly cleaned before leaving.

He also reminded residents that if they burn scented candles in common parts of the building, such as the front or back stairs of their homes, they may violate the rules of the occupants or the deed of mutual covenant of the building; public housing tenants will be deducted five points for committing crimes, which will be caused by burning. The black smoke may also violate the Air Pollution Control (Smog) Regulations and so on.
